Dog House Tavern

2517 Bagby
Houston, TX 77006
713-520-1118

Owner – Brandon
Bartenders – Kathy, Rochelle, Mai, Greg & Jen

DH as it is affectionately referred to, has been a Midtown staple since before there really was a Midtown. I’ve been going there for at least 7 years now. Their happy hour is great for beers. Domestic long necks are $2.50 till 7, and all night on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday (I think). They have $1.50 Tecate' and Tecate Light on Thursday for the budget minded beer drinker. They also have great pint specials along with Lone Stars and Mickey’s Big Mouth. They have one of the larger beer selections in the city.

DH has a large number of regulars, and we all know each other, and there is a good reason for that. The bartenders are friendly, conversational, and very attentive. It’s kinda like Cheers but without the accent. They also have darts, Golden Tee, pool and a large variety of TVs for your viewing pleasure.

I’m there a couple of times a week along with Clyde, Mikey P., Kat and assorted others like Donald and Gary May. Stop in for a cold one or three. You will be back.

River Queen - Best Li'l Beer Joint In Town

4712 ½ Hwy 146
Baytown, TX 77522

Owner – Gay Mitchum
Manager – Rusty Craig

Right behind the Limelight Lounge, you will find jewel of a place called The River Queen. And yes it is right on the water. It’s two double-wides mushed together to make one fine beer drankin establishment. The beer is quite cold, plus they have wine and set ups. It’s nice and dark inside and complete with a real jukebox, not one of those new fangled internet ones, pool tables, plenty of chairs and pics on all the walls. Oh and watch your language as Gay lives next door and has cameras and mics in the River Queen. If you’re not behaving, she will call you out and may even ask you to leave.

The service is great. If you’re outside, the bartender will getcha on the 12 minutes beer cycle. Well that’s at least the cycle for Richard and I. They are indeed biker friendly and have plenty of parking. You won’t be the same once you’ve been to the River Queen. It is definitely high on my rotation when I do the East Side run. Stop in for a cold one.

The Velvet Lounge

5535 Memorial Dr.
Houston, TX 77007
713-880-0400
Hours – 4 pm to 2 am Mon - Sat

Owners – Blake & Joe
Bartenders – Cookie and Rochelle

Affectionately known as Velvet, this is my home base bar. It’s seven blocks from the house. As soon as they see me heading toward the door, an ice cold beer is waiting on the bar.
Blake runs a nice happy hour until 9: Mondays - $2.75 wells, Tuesdays - $2.75 wells and domestic bottles, Wednesdays - $2.50 domestic pints, Thursday - $3.75 U Call It, Friday - Wine Night. My personal favorite would be the long necks.

There’s seating inside for about 50 people. Darts, trivia, TVs and a nice juke box round out the package. They occasionally have music on Friday and Saturday nights. You typically do not see the crowds till later in the night, but I run the early shift and am gone before the throngs of people hit.

The Velvet does not serve food, but there are many choices close: Los Cucos (ask for Ted), Texadelphia and Quizno’s. Go for the cheap drinks and great service. Tell um I sent ya.

Texas Dives - The Story

The idea for Texas Dives came to me some years ago. The original plan was to start a web site where I listed all the dives, bars, and lounges I've discovered in my many years of riding my Harley around the state. With the advent and ease of blogs, I changed my thinking a little and that's how this site came about.

I will be listing the places I've been along with a little commentary and web site links when possible. I may even provide a rating system for them. Who knows! It's a work in progress.
